What’s New at LCS
On behalf of all staff at LCS, we would like to wish you and your families a healthy & safe Thanksgiving. We at LCS are so thankful for the wonderful students and families that we serve. During a time of so much uncertainty, we work together as one big family to make sure the needs of all students are met. Enjoy the break and family time together!
We would like to welcome Cody Huiras to our 6-8 classroom. He is a graduate of Southwest Minnesota State University, Marshall. He is excited to be joining our LCS family as a substitute for Mrs. Petersen’s classroom.
It is with a sad heart that Pat Simon is retiring. He has been an amazing part of the LCS family and has been working as a janitor for LCS for the past 6 years. We thank Pat for the service he has done for LCS! Our school looks wonderful because of him. We thank him for all the hard work and dedication that he has given to the school and wish him good luck in the future.
We welcome Alyssa Besemer as our new Special Education para!
We still our looking for classroom subs. If you have a four year degree in any field, and are willing to substitute for a day please contact the office.
Distance Learning Memo
Dear LCS Families:
Lafayette Public Charter School will be shifting to Distance Learning for all grades starting Wednesday, Dec. 2nd, 2020. In order to make this a successful transition, there will be no school for students on Monday, Nov. 30th & Tuesday, Dec. 1st, 2020. These days will be transitional planning days to allow our staff to switch to distance learning. Distance learning will start Wednesday, Dec. 2nd 2020.
Our plan is to provide Distance Learning for the month of December. We will monitor the health conditions within our community and our ability to properly staff our building. If the data shows that we can return, we will start back in the hybrid model.
Below is information on childcare, meals, devices and our pick-off/drop-off calendar:
Schools are required to provide free school-aged child care during regular school hours for critical workers when in hybrid or distance learning. The child care is for district enrolled students from Pre-K to age twelve. We will use the following criteria to determine eligibility for care. We do need to prioritize what we can safely staff in our buildings.
1. Both parents must be Tier 1 essential workers
2. LCS employee who needs childcare.
3. You are a first responder and working away from home.
4. You are a single parent with no other daycare options and working away from home.
We do not have the staff or space to hold child care for all of our students. We are required to socially distance students in rooms and assign staff to support these children.
Below is the language from the Governor’s Executive Order:
The school-age care for children of critical workers is intended for extreme circumstances in which no parent or guardian is at home, as all of the parents or legal guardians in the child’s household are Tier I critical workers. If it is a two-parent household and one is not a critical worker, a school is not required to provide free school-age care to the family, but the school could choose to provide the care, if they have the capacity to do so while ensuring health and safety requirements can still be met. School districts and charter schools may also encourage parents or legal guardians of Eligible Children to not utilize the school-age care program if they have the ability to work from home.
This free child care is during the school hours (8:10am-3:10pm). Transportation will be provided. Availability is first come, first serve.
If your family qualifies and you would like to sign up for childcare, please call the LCS Office at 507-228-8943 by Monday, Nov. 23rd by 3:00pm.
Breakfast & Lunch will be available for students during distance learning. They will NOT be delivered. We will have pick up sites in Lafayette, Winthrop & New Ulm. These meals are free of charge but you must sign up (if you sign up, you will get meals for the entire distance learning time). If you’d like to sign your family up for meals, please contact the LCS Office by Monday, Nov. 23rd 2020 by 3:00pm.
Meals will be provided to our child care free of charge.
If you don’t currently have a working device that can be used with Google meets or Zoom for distance learning, please contact the LCS Office by Monday, Nov. 23rd, 2020 by 3:00pm.
Pick-up/Drop off Calendar:
We will again be doing a pick-up/drop-off day for materials (similar to last spring). Watch your e-mail the week of Nov. 30th for a calendar showing those days.
Our staff has been doing an amazing job working with students in the classroom and via distance learning for the last 14 weeks. The switch to distance learning is not our desired plan but necessary for the health and safety of our students and staff. We want to work together with families to continue to provide a high-quality education and the support services necessary for each student to succeed. Thank you to all families for allowing us to offer in-person & hybrid learning to this point.
More information will be provided the week of Nov. 30th, 2020.
